These days, the planting of cotton raw materials, a strategic crop for the local economy, began in Turkmenistan, a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture of Turkmenistan told The “River”.

“It is planned to collect 1 million 250 thousand tons of cotton from an area of 580 thousand hectares this year,” the report said.

Traditionally, honorary Turkmen elders are invited to the planting ceremony.

Turkmenistan, one of the ten largest cotton-producing countries in the world, reduced its arable land to 40,000 hectares in 2023. Experts say that the vacated land area will be directed to increase the production of potatoes and vegetables.

Much of the cotton is used to produce textiles that have become”trademarks of Turkmenistan". Local home fabrics, sportswear and jeans are being commissioned by some Western brands and distributed through Walmart's worldwide chain of stores.

In the state commodity exchange auctions of Turkmenistan, the price of these products is determined in accordance with the quotes of the Liverpool cotton agency.
