The United Nations International Court of justice partially satisfied Iran's lawsuit against the United States over the issue of freezing foreign assets. Washington must now pay compensation to Tehran. This was reported by the UN press service.
The court case concluded that the United States had frozen Iran's foreign assets in violation of its obligations under the 1955 Treaty of friendship between the countries. At the same time, relations between Iran and the United States became hostile after the Islamic Revolution of 1979, when the United States decided to withdraw from the agreement only in 2018-after the introduction of many sanctions package.
The court ruled that Washington had frozen the assets of some Iranian companies without leaving the friendship agreement, i.e. repaying Tehran for “illegal sanctions”. The amount of compensation and the procedure for payment must be decided by the countries themselves. If they cannot agree within the next two years, the judges will consider the matter separately.
Decisions of the UN International Court of justice are binding and cannot be appealed. At the same time, the court does not have mechanisms to force countries to comply with these decisions. Both the United States and Iran had previously ignored other UN court decisions.
