According to the information of the main department of the Ministry of Emergencies of Russia for the Krasnodar Territory, due to heavy rains, the Matsesta River overflowed its banks in the Khostinsky District of Sochi. Four adjacent areas, an administrative building and a pumping station were flooded. The mayor of Sochi, Alexei Kopaygorodsky, said that houses on six streets were flooded. The gas pipeline and electricity networks were also damaged, said Vadim Snegirev, deputy head of Sochi.
According to the Sochi administration, at least 15 millimeters of rain fell in an hour, and the sensor indicating the water level in the river reached the "dangerous event" line. Due to the traffic jam in the Matsesta area, public transport has stopped. The mayor of the city issued an instruction to eliminate the consequences of the flood.
In the city, it was decided to temporarily close the beaches "until the weather completely improves," said Alexei Kopaygorodsky. "Swimming is now prohibited in order to ensure the safety of vacationers," he said.
According to the mayor's office, heavy rain, thunder and hail are expected in Sochi until the end of the day on June 14. Water levels in rivers may reach negative levels, and there is also a risk of flooding. A regular storm warning is issued in the city.
