The number and extent of wildfires in Canada can break all records. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that there are now 414 wildfires in Canada, 239 of which are out of control. More than 20,000 people were evacuated from their homes.
In Quebec alone, there are more than 150 active fires, despite local firefighters being able to extinguish no more than 40 fires at a time.
Because of these fires, smoke is also observed in American cities - New York, Washington, etc. The US is sending emergency aid to its northern neighbor.
In addition to Quebec, 3.3 million hectares of forests are burning in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories.
Forest fires in Canada are characteristic of this period of the year. However, the scale of the fires observed this year is very large, partly due to dry weather and warming temperatures. If the fires continue to spread at this rate, officials estimate that 2023 will be the worst year in Canada by the size of the burned area.
Thousands of Canadians were evacuated due to nearby fires, and tens of millions across North America were warned of potential smoke hazards.
In many cities in Canada and the United States, including Toronto, Ottawa, New York and Washington, the sky turned orange. The Ottawa government called air pollution caused by the fires extremely dangerous to the health of people, especially those suffering from respiratory diseases. The White House said it was sending aid to Canada to fight forest fires. More than 600 U.S. firefighters equipped with special aviation are helping their Canadian counterparts on the spot, Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre said.
