The Sun's disk is crossed by a black spot four times larger than the Earth. It is now moving towards Earth.
South Korean astronomer Bum-Suk Yom was the first to notice the appearance of a very large black spot on the Sun. It can also be seen in regular sunglasses.
According to Business Insider, on May 23, in some parts of the United States, they managed to see him without glasses. Experts say that this is not surprising - smoke from nearby forest fires that day acted as a natural filter. In other circumstances, this is not possible.
In fact, this is not a new spot, astronomers have been following it for some time and named it AR3310. This is not a rare occurrence - the Sun is currently preparing for the peak of activity in its 11-year cycle. This is what causes black spots. In fact, these are places with a very active magnetic field. They do not pose a serious threat, but can cause severe solar flares. In turn, they cause geomagnetic storms on Earth.
The AR3310 already produces an M-class voltage - the second level on the intensity scale. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the sunspot is moving toward Earth, meaning there is a 20 percent chance of an X-class flare, the first and most powerful. Experts warn that it can form beautiful polar showers and at the same time cause disruptions in radio communications.
