The current head of state Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the completion of the vote.
Polling stations were open from 8:00 to 17:00 local time. Citizens elected the President of Turkey and deputies of the parliament, which consists of 600 seats.
Three candidates are participating in the struggle for the presidency:
- the current head of state, the head of the Justice and Development Party Recep Tayyip Erdogan;
- opposition candidate, leader of the Republican People's Party Kemal Kilicdaroglu;
- candidate from the ATA Alliance Sinan Ogan.
The chairman of the Rodina Party, Muharrem Inje, who was the fourth candidate, withdrew from the elections on May 11.
To win the election, you need to get more than 50% of the votes. If no one can do it, then the second round will be held on May 28.
In case of victory, the opposition bloc wants to return the parliamentary form of government, which Erdogan replaced with a presidential one. In addition, the oppositionists intend to fight inflation, restore the independence of the country's Central Bank and continue Turkey's path to membership in the European Union.
Judging by the polls, Erdogan may lose. Polls show that Kilicdaroglu and Erdogan has approximately equal chances of winning.
36 parties are fighting for seats in the parliament, some of which have joined alliances to overcome the 7% barrier required for passage to the legislature.
