The list of charges upheld by the grand jury included "willful acquisition of information related to national defense," "conspiracy to obstruct justice," "concealment of documents or records," "false statements, etc. A clause such as "giving instructions" is included. Each count carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
The politician still maintains his innocence. He also claims that "1,850 boxes" of classified materials were found in the home and office of the current head of state Joe Biden, which he obtained before he became president.
Trump was invited to testify in a Miami court on June 13, just before his 77th birthday.
The indictment of the former US president is an unprecedented event in American history. About a year ago, investigators found about 13,000 government documents at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence, 100 of which were classified as classified.
After learning that he would be indicted, Trump posted on his Truth social platform, "I am an innocent MAN!" he wrote.
This is the second criminal case against Trump. As part of the first, he will be arraigned in New York in March 2024 on charges of paying a porn star to remain silent.
