EU diplomacy leader Josep Borrel called for continued support for the Syrian people suffering from ten years of armed conflict and economic crisis, and confirmed plans to provide financial assistance in 2023 and 2024.
"At the same time, we must not forget about the needs of Syrian refugees and communities that accept them, living in neighboring countries — Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq. We must justify the hope of the Syrian people and the region,” Borrel said at the international donor conference on the future of Syria and the region in Brussels on Thursday.
"I am glad to reaffirm my promise on behalf of the European Union last year to allocate 1.5 billion euros for the 2023 calendar year in the interest of Syrian citizens and refugees in the region, as well as the communities that receive them. I also assure you that for the calendar year 2024, YI will allocate 560 million euros,” Borrell said.
According to him, 90% of Syrians living in the country suffer from poverty and 60% suffer from lack of food. "Unfortunately, despite the tireless efforts of UN Special Envoy Gair Pedersen over the past year, very little success has been achieved in resolving the Syrian conflict,” said the head of European diplomacy.
