NATO has announced that it will remain a union of European and North American countries, refusing to accept Asian countries into its ranks. Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of the alliance, said this in an interview with The Washington Post newspaper. "NATO will remain an alliance of North America and Europe, it will not become a global alliance with Asian members. Our collective security guarantee applies to the NATO territory," Stoltenberg said. For information, currently 31 countries are members of NATO. Finland will be the last country to join NATO on April 4, 2023. NATO currently recognizes Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Ukraine and Sweden as candidates for NATO membership, having adopted a NATO membership action plan in December 2018.
