Some companies are inviting back employees who were laid off because of artificial intelligence. This is occurring because AI technologies have failed to deliver the expected results, and a need for human oversight remains. This phenomenon is being referred to as the "AI boomerang."

For instance, the Swedish payment service Klarna has begun rehiring staff for its customer service department. The company’s CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, acknowledged that there had been an over-reliance on chatbots in an effort to cut costs. Similarly, Ford reported that it has hired or promoted 350 experienced engineers after AI tools failed to meet expectations in quality control.

Experts point out that artificial intelligence cannot fully replace an employee’s experience, institutional knowledge, or ability to interact with other people. Furthermore, skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork remain significant advantages that human employees possess.
