Member of the Democratic Party of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, co-chair of the Working Group on Azerbaijan Steve Cohen, representing the state of Tennessee, made a statement in connection with the 31st anniversary of the Khojaly genocide.

According to Report’s US bureau, the document signed by the congressman contains detailed information about the Khojaly genocide, one of the worst tragedies in the history of Azerbaijan:

“Khojaly, located in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, was once a city where 7,000 people lived happily. It was the biggest massacre aimed at the killing of ethnic Azerbaijanis and the civilian population. On February 26, 1992, the Armenian armed forces brutally killed 613 people, including 63 children, 106 women and 70 elderly people. Eight families were exterminated. 130 children lost one of their parents, and 25 children lost both parents,” the report says.

The congressman said that although a truce was reached between the two countries in 1994, Armenia took steps far from a peaceful position and prevented the establishment of peace in the region. The document refers to Azerbaijan’s efforts for peace and stability in the South Caucasus.

In his statement, Cohen noted that Azerbaijan is a strong partner of the US and its allies. The role of Azerbaijan in ensuring the energy security of Europe is also emphasized.
