When Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wins the second round of presidential elections in Turkey, one of the main tasks will be to develop a new constitution. This was stated by Erdoğan in an interview with TRT Haber.
“Our greatest desire is to lead our country towards a new constitution, taking into account our national will. It will be one of our biggest initiatives in the new era. We want to save democracy from the Constitution that was the product of the coup era,” Erdogan said.
He clarifies that the issue is first evaluated within the framework of his party Alliance (Erdogan leads the Justice and Development Party, is nominating for the presidency from the right-wing “Republican alliance”), followed by dialogue with other parties.
On may 14, the first round of the presidential election was held in Turkey. Erdoğan received 49.24 percent of the vote. His main opponent, Kemal Sabirdaroğlu, garnered 45.07 percent of the vote. Both candidates qualified for the second round on 28 may. There were a total of four candidates in the election.
Ata party spokesperson Sinan Ogan, who received 5% of the vote in the first round, said he would support the incumbent leader in the second round. Commenting on his statement, Erdoğan assured that there was no “absolute bargaining” between him and Ogan. In response to the question of whether oghan had a claim in the vice president or ministry, Erdoğan said there was no such request.
