On November 4, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting on the socio-economic development of the Bukhara region during his visit to the region.
The president said he had brought forward new initiatives worth $30 billion aimed at developing the regional economy and improving living conditions.
The meeting focused on improving drinking water supply. A $385 million project is being implemented with the participation of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, with an additional $248 million to be allocated for its second phase. As a result, water supply will improve for 1.7 million residents, while 775,000 people will be connected to the sewage network. Access to centralized drinking water is expected to increase from 80% to 95%.
In the transport sector, reconstruction of the A-380 highway will be completed this year. Next year, a 69-kilometer section of the M-37 highway passing through the region will be renovated, and a 4.5-kilometer bypass road will be built around Bukhara. Plans also include constructing a new toll road and a railway line for high-speed trains on the Samarkand–Bukhara route. The new highway is expected to reduce travel time from five hours to one and a half hours.
A new international airport worth $300 million is being built in Bukhara. It will be capable of serving 20 aircraft and 1,200 passengers simultaneously. The airport will be connected to the city center by a 24-kilometer road.
In tourism, the goal is to increase the number of foreign visitors to 7 million. The Old City, the Seven Sufi Saints, Chor-Bakr, Poykent, Varakhsha and Vardonze historical sites will be connected under a unified tourism concept. A $500 million tourism cluster is also planned on an area of 1,000 hectares in Bukhara district.
The region has the potential to implement industrial projects worth $28 billion over the next three years, the meeting noted. Of this amount, $17 billion is expected to go to the oil and gas and chemical industries. Plans also include establishing an oil and chemical science and industrial cluster in Kogon district.
Over the next three years, wind power plants with a total capacity of 3.1 gigawatts and energy storage systems with a capacity of 1 gigawatt will be built. In addition, 745 kilometers of power lines will be constructed. In the textile industry, projects worth at least $1 billion are planned for next year, with exports expected to double.
In the social sector, tasks were set to increase the number of private kindergartens and schools, ensure that 50% of school graduates study at technical schools, and double the coverage of dual education at higher education institutions. Instructions were also given to improve the quality of medical services and develop primary healthcare.
At the end of the meeting, President Mirziyoyev announced his decision to award Nargiza Nematova, governor of Olot district, the “Fidokorona xizmatlari uchun” Order for her contribution to regional development and job creation.
The president’s visit to Bukhara region concluded, and he returned to Tashkent.
