World’s First Rail-Free Train Begins Operation

The world’s first rail-free “smart train” has officially begun operation in Zhuzhou, Hunan Province, China.

Developed by CRRC Zhuzhou, the train runs using a virtual rail system — there are no physical tracks. Instead, the train “sees” its digital path through sensors and an intelligent navigation system that allows it to automatically follow, stop, or turn when needed.

The train can travel at speeds of up to 70 km/h and carry around 500 passengers at a time. Experts are calling it a revolutionary step in urban transportation, offering a cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to subways and trams.

Chinese engineers plan to expand the technology to other major cities in the coming years.
