Woman awarded $17 million after doctors mistakenly removed her healthy bladder
A woman in the U.S. state of Maine has been awarded $17 million in compensation after doctors mistakenly removed her healthy bladder.
According to reports, the 43-year-old underwent surgery in 2023 to remove a benign tumor from her left ovary. However, instead of removing the tumor, the surgeon accidentally removed her entire healthy bladder.
The mistake was discovered only after she returned to the hospital suffering from severe pain and an inability to urinate.
Doctors later reconstructed a new bladder using intestinal tissue. Nevertheless, she still has to use a catheter every day and remain under regular medical supervision.
