Why is the electronic prescription system needed?

In Uzbekistan, prescription regulations for dispensing medicines are being strengthened. These measures are aimed at increasing treatment safety and protecting human health. The main goal is to prevent the unnecessary use of medicines without medical need, stop unsupervised treatment, and ensure that most essential medicines are now dispensed only with a doctor’s prescription.

Many people perceive the electronic prescription as an obstacle to obtaining medicines. In reality, however, a prescription is one of the most important and effective ways to protect patients’ health. Through prescriptions, it is possible to limit access to high-dose or long-term treatment medicines without a doctor’s advice, as well as prevent doctors from prescribing excessive medications at the same time.

Uncontrolled use of antibiotics poses one of the greatest risks, as it increases the number of drug-resistant bacteria. The electronic prescription system is aimed at reducing these risks.

The system is currently undergoing a pilot phase. This testing period is of great importance for identifying and eliminating technical and organizational issues, and for ensuring the safe and effective nationwide implementation of the system in the future.
