Venezuelan President Maduro arrested

US President Donald Trump announced that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife have been captured and taken out of the country. Trump said that the operation was carried out in cooperation with US law enforcement agencies and that details would be announced later.
Today, January 3, an air strike was carried out on military and civilian facilities in the city of Caracas at night. At least seven explosions were heard in the capital, smoke rose from some military bases and power outages were observed in other buildings. The Venezuelan government accused the US of the attack, declared a state of emergency and called on supporters to take to the streets.

Earlier, in December 2025, the US targeted a port facility on the Venezuelan coast with a drone. This strike was aimed at the drug trafficking group Tren de Aragua, which increased tensions between the US and Maduro. The White House has described the campaign as a war on drugs, but it has also been said that the goal is to force Maduro to surrender.
