Uzbekistan to build 73 new hydropower plants by 2032

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a presentation on the development of the hydropower sector. At the meeting, it was noted that the share of hydropower in electricity generation in the country currently amounts to 10-12 percent, so its expansion was identified as an important task. It was noted that in recent years, the number of hydropower plants has increased from 36 to 100, with a total capacity of 2.4 gigawatts. The presentation considered plans for the implementation of 73 promising projects worth a total of $5.8 billion in 2026-2032. As a result, an additional 3.6 gigawatts of capacity are expected to be created. Also, 13 hydropower plants will be commissioned in 2026. Among the major projects are the Yukory Pskom HPP in Bostanlyk (160 MW) and the Sokh HPP (15 MW). In the Topalang region, it is planned to build 42 small hydroelectric power plants. For the first time, the construction of 3 hydroelectric power stations is also being considered in order to introduce energy storage systems. In addition, projects for the improvement of river banks in Tashkent, increasing the number of artificial lakes to 12, and creating green areas were also discussed.
