Reports have emerged regarding the death of a 27-year-old woman from cholera in Russia's Irkutsk region. A hospital in the city of Shelekhov was placed under quarantine, and 197 individuals who had been in contact with the deceased were placed under medical observation. According to reports, the woman was hospitalized on September 29. Initially, a severe case of COVID-19 was suspected, but the possibility of a highly dangerous infection was later considered. Specialists identified 197 people who had contact with the deceased; 189 of them were hospitalized for preventive monitoring. Official statements indicate that none of them showed symptoms of the disease and that laboratory test results were negative. Following the incident, reports circulated on social media claiming the woman worked at an institute dedicated to cholera research and had contracted the disease in the laboratory. However, the Irkutsk Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology denied these claims, stating that the woman had never worked there. Against the backdrop of these reports, Uzbekistan has also intensified the preparedness of relevant services to prevent the entry and spread of highly dangerous infectious diseases within the country. The Committee for Sanitary-Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health announced that it is continuously monitoring the situation through official sources, including competent Russian authorities and the World Health Organization. Specifically, information is being analyzed regarding the laboratory confirmation of the diagnosis, the probable source and routes of transmission, the deceased's movements, and individuals who had contact with her. The Committee stated that the public would be provided with additional information in accordance with established procedures should there be any changes in the epidemiological situation.
