According to EastFruit analysts, Uzbekistan benefited well against the background of the tense situation related to the supply of onions to Europe and the Middle East.
From the date of lifting the ban on the export of onions in the country (March 15, 2023) until the end of May 2023, Uzbekistan exported more than 157 thousand tons of onions.
"This is a new record in a short period of time. "For 2.5 months, the total revenue from onion export reached 29.2 million US dollars," the publication said.
Despite the ban on onion exports until mid-March, the volume of exports as of the end of May 2023 was 33% higher than the total exports in 2022.
In turn, it seems that the geography of export has expanded significantly. Last year, Uzbek onions were mainly sent to six countries of this region and Ukraine, and in 2023, 18 countries will be buyers of Uzbek onions.
In particular, according to the publication, five EU countries import onions from Uzbekistan. They are Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and the Czech Republic. In Eastern Europe, a large volume of Uzbek onions was delivered to Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.
Onion production is the largest in Kazakhstan (92.3 thousand tons), Russia (47.3 thousand tons), Kyrgyzstan (7.1 thousand tons), Belarus (3.1 thousand tons) and Latvia (1. 9 thousand tons) were exported to the countries.
The product was also exported to Pakistan (51 tons) and Iraq (47 tons), which was relatively unusual.
