Uzbekistan’s public debt reaches $48.3 billion

As of July 1, 2026, Uzbekistan’s public debt amounted to $48.3 billion. This is $4.8 billion more than a year earlier. Public debt accounted for 27% of the country’s GDP.

Of the total debt, $40.7 billion is external debt, while $7.6 billion is domestic debt.

Of the external debt, $22.5 billion was borrowed from international financial institutions. The largest creditors are the World Bank ($9.1 billion) and the Asian Development Bank ($8.2 billion). Uzbekistan also borrowed $3.9 billion from Chinese banks and $3.1 billion from the Japan International Cooperation Agency and other organizations.

The largest portion of the external debt — $20.5 billion — was used to cover the state budget deficit. In addition, $5.5 billion was allocated to the energy sector, $3 billion to transport, $3.3 billion to agriculture and water management, and $3.4 billion to housing and utilities.

While Uzbekistan’s public debt stood at $17.8 billion in 2019, it reached $46.85 billion by the end of 2025.
