Uzbekistan’s President and Japan’s Prime Minister Promote $12 Billion Cooperation Projects

Negotiations were held in Tokyo between President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Prime Minister of Japan Sanae Takaichi.

Leading Japanese companies such as Sojitz, Toyota Tsusho, Sumitomo, Itochu, Kyoto Plaza, Balcom, and Shikoku Electric are successfully implementing major projects in Uzbekistan in the fields of energy, geology, tourism, infrastructure development, information technology, and other priority sectors.

The portfolio of joint projects with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) covers areas including energy, petrochemicals, transport, education, and agriculture.

The Head of State outlined several key priorities for further strengthening strategic partnership with Japan. These include green energy and reducing carbon emissions in industry, information technologies, critical minerals, mechanical engineering, as well as the modernization of healthcare and tourism infrastructure.

It was noted with satisfaction that, as part of preparations for the summit, a new portfolio of cooperation projects worth over $12 billion has been formed. To advance these projects, the establishment of a joint investment platform was proposed.

Japanese language is currently taught at seven higher education institutions in Uzbekistan. For the past ten years, the Uzbek language has been studied at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.

The Rectors’ Forum serves as an important platform for exchanging experience in human capital development. Today, a meeting was held with rectors of leading Japanese universities, resulting in significant agreements on expanding cooperation programs and scientific and innovative exchanges.

Together with the University of Tsukuba, plans are underway to establish the first Uzbekistan–Japan University in Tashkent.

To expand cultural and tourism ties, it was proposed to regularly hold cultural days, exhibitions, youth forums, and film festivals. On the eve of the visit, Uzbekistan Culture Days were successfully held in Japan.

In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, mutual Culture Years will be held in both countries in 2027.
