Uzbekistan may introduce excise tax on chips

Uzbekistan is expected to introduce an excise tax on potato chips from April 1, 2026. According to the proposal of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, an excise tax of 15,000 soums will be levied for each kilogram of chips. The tax will be paid by both chip manufacturers and importers of the product.
The ministry said that the proposal is based on the WHO recommendations on combating overweight and obesity, as well as the Ministry of Health's guidelines on promoting healthy eating. The experience of other countries has also been studied.

Recall that since 2024, a separate excise tax has also been introduced on sugary drinks: for carbonated drinks - 500 soums per liter, for energy drinks - 2,000 soums per liter. This procedure is currently being applied to all sugar-containing soft drinks.
