Equality Now, an international human rights organization, has published a report on countries in Eurasia where child, early and forced marriages persist.
The study comprehensively analyzed the problem of child marriage, early marriage and forced marriage (BEMN) in seven Eurasian countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. All seven countries have taken steps to reform child and forced marriage laws, but only Georgia and Azerbaijan set the minimum age for marriage at 18 without exception. The rest retain legal provisions that allow marriage before the age of 18 with parental consent or local authority approval.
Uzbekistan has the lowest rate of child marriage - 3.4 percent, which has decreased significantly over the last ten years. Equality Now is calling on governments to set the minimum age for marriage at 18 without exception.
