Uzbek Student Wins International Award for Short Film

The short feature film Early-Blooming Tulip (Erta ungan lola), directed by Akhadjon Okhunov, a second-year student of the Film and Television Directing program at the State Institute of Arts and Culture of Uzbekistan, participated in the 3rd International Eurasia Kinofest and won one of the festival’s prestigious awards.

Held annually in Sochi, Russia, the festival is considered one of the largest film events in the Eurasian region. It brings together filmmakers from various countries, primarily across Eurasia. This year’s festival took place from June 13 to 19 and attracted participants from 53 countries around the world.

The festival program featured competitions in short films, documentaries, and feature-length films. Representing Uzbekistan in the feature film category was director Rashid Malikov’s film Cotton (Paxta), which won the Best Screenplay award.

In the short film competition, Uzbekistan was represented by five films: Step. Yusuf, the Sun Child, Particle, Scissors, Kindness, and Akhadjon Okhunov’s Early-Blooming Tulip. More than 30 films were screened in this category. At the conclusion of the competition, six films received awards in various nominations. Early-Blooming Tulip won the award for Best Foreign-Language Russian Film.

Set against the backdrop of World War II, the film tells the story of an Uzbek reconnaissance sergeant named Kobil, who becomes trapped behind enemy lines in the forests near Kursk, and an orphaned girl named Galina. In the story, a tulip that blooms early amid the snow serves as a symbol of the human desire to live and the enduring hope that never fades from the heart.
