Use of AI Banned for Younger Students in New York Schools

In New York City public schools, the use of artificial intelligence tools will be restricted for one year for students up to the eighth grade. This policy affects approximately 600,000 students.
As a result of the new rule, the use of nearly 40 educational AI programs currently employed in schools will be temporarily suspended. Access to chatbots will be restricted across all grade levels. However, AI will not be completely banned for high school students; they will receive instruction in AI literacy and be permitted to use certain platforms under teacher supervision. Teachers may continue to use AI for lesson planning and other professional tasks.
New York official Zohran Mamdani explained the decision by citing the need to ensure that children engage in direct interaction with teachers and peers, develop independent thinking skills, and solve problems on their own.
