The US Virtual Embassy has urged American citizens in Iran to leave the country immediately. The warning comes amid ongoing mass protests and a sharp deterioration in security in Iran.
According to reports, more than 500 people have been killed and thousands have been arrested in recent weeks as a result of protests in Iran. The internet and communications have been almost completely shut down. US citizens are being advised to leave Iran by land, via Armenia or Turkey, if possible. Those who cannot leave are being asked to stay at home or in a safe building with the necessary supplies.
At the same time, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of a 25% tariff on countries trading with Iran. He accused Tehran of violently suppressing the protests and said that options for military strikes, cyber and psychological operations were being considered.
