According to the latest estimates, 1,500 people were killed and about 2,000 injured as a result of the earthquake that occurred in Afghanistan on October 10. Another 43,000 people were affected to one degree or another. Daniel Endres, Acting UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan, informed journalists about this on Monday.

"The most affected area is the Injil district. And there are about 23,000 people who have been affected. This is about 53 percent of all victims," he said.

Enders also said that more than 3,300 houses were completely destroyed by the earthquake. Significant damage was caused to water supply systems and wells, and large amounts of debris and rubble from destroyed buildings can lead to water pollution and outbreaks of diseases.

"Humanitarian organizations are in a race against time, they are trying to meet the needs of the affected communities before the onset of winter," Endres said.

"The temperature at night has already dropped significantly, and those people whose houses have been damaged remain outside at night, including in the city of Herat, for fear that their damaged houses will collapse," he added.

He also said that a total of $93.6 million is required for humanitarian operations to restore the affected areas and provide assistance to the victims in the next six months.
