The criminal who shot and killed two Swedish citizens in the capital of Belgium was a member of the terrorist group "Islamic State", said Eric Van Duys, representative of the Belgian Federal Prosecutor's Office.
On the evening of Tuesday, October 17, the highest level of terrorist threat was announced in Brussels. The victims of the attack were Swedish citizens, which was confirmed by Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.
According to Eric Van Duys, the representative of the Belgian Federal Prosecutor's Office, the criminal who carried out the attack was inspired by the terrorist group "Islamic State". Van Duys also urged residents to stay indoors "until the threat is over." The report says that the criminal managed to escape, and the search for him is underway.
The attack happened shortly after 19:00 local time, before the start of the European football championship qualifying match at the King Baudouin stadium, where the national teams of Belgium and Sweden were due to meet in the north of Brussels. As a result, after the attack was reported and after consultation with both teams and local police officials, the match was abandoned with a score of 1-1.
