🦇🦠 Two new viruses dangerous to humans have been identified in bats in China

 

Scientists from the Chinese Institute of Endemic Disease Control have identified two new viruses similar to Nipah and Hendra viruses in the kidneys of bats collected in Yunnan province. These viruses can cause encephalitis and respiratory diseases.

Over the course of four years, 142 bats were examined and a total of 22 viruses were identified, 20 of which were previously unknown to science. New parasites and bacteria were also found. The researchers say the results highlight the need for a deeper study of the zoonotic threat.
