The national team of Turkmenistan won the first medal of the World Summer Universiade-2023, held in Chengdu (China).
As an ORIENT correspondent was told in the National Olympic Committee of the country, wushu player Ayguzel Gurbangeldiyeva in the weight category up to 52 kg became the owner of the bronze award. The athlete is a fifth-year student of the Turkmen State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports.
Recall that the sports student team of Turkmenistan performs in four sports: athletics (3 athletes), wushu (4 athletes), swimming (3 athletes), judo (6 athletes).
The World Summer Universiade was supposed to take place in 2021, but it was postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the sporting event was again postponed for the same reason. In June 2022, the Executive Committee of the International University Sports Federation announced new dates for the competition from July 28 to August 8, 2023. Despite the fact that the Universiade takes place in 2023, it has retained its original name "Chengdu 2021".
Age limits and athlete qualifications will be adapted to allow all students who were eligible to participate in 2021 and 2022 to participate.
At the Chengdu 2021 Games, athletes from universities around the world compete for 269 sets of medals in 18 sports.
