It should be noted that a grant in the amount of $195,600 from the Ambassadors' Fund for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (AFCP) was provided to the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan and the Institute of History and Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan in August 2020.
To date, AFCP has supported 30 projects in Turkmenistan worth about two million US dollars.
Shekhrislam was an ancient city that existed from the 9th century to the beginning of the 15th century, in the Karakum desert, 20 kilometers north of the city of Bakharden. It was a regional center and an important stop on the Silk Road.
Sardobs in Shahrislam were fed through a system of tunnels, unique for Central Asia, called kariz. The tunnels carried water over a distance of more than 20 km from sources located in the Kopetdag mountains.
The reservoirs in Shahrislam are the only example of a rectangular sardoba in Central Asia.
