On May 16, the debates of the UN General Assembly on agenda item 61 “Zone of Peace, Trust and Cooperation in Central Asia”, which were initiated by Turkmenistan, took place. This was reported on the website of the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN.
During the debates held by Turkmenistan as Vice-Chairman of the UN General Assembly, representatives of the delegations of the member countries of the organization made presentations. In their speeches, they touched upon such topical issues as strengthening security and stability. In this context, the current security challenges facing the region and ways to strengthen regional cooperation in combating them were outlined.
Speaking from a high rostrum, Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Aksoltan Atayeva stated the need for further development of the Zone of Peace, Trust and Cooperation in Central Asia, as a legal phenomenon by analogy with zones in other parts of the world, in particular, in the South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean.
The formation of a zone of peace in Central Asia became possible thanks to the institutional and legal framework of multilateral cooperation laid down by the countries of the region, the mechanism for cooperation between the countries of the region at the highest state level, in particular, regular consultative meetings of the heads of state of the region, the Dialogue of Women of the Countries of Central Asia, the Academy of Preventive Diplomacy for Youth and other sites.
