Turkey successfully performs fetal spinal surgery in the womb for the first time
For the first time in the history of Turkish medicine, doctors successfully repaired a spinal defect in a 26-week-old fetus while it was still in the mother's womb.
The operation was performed at Hacettepe University and lasted 6.5 hours, involving a team of 30 medical specialists.
According to reports, the fetus of Sebiha Çakmak had been diagnosed with a neural tube defect. Through the surgery, doctors were able to prevent serious complications that could have developed after birth, including walking disabilities, fluid buildup in the brain (hydrocephalus), and loss of bladder and bowel control.
