Turkey bans social media for children

The Turkish parliament has passed a bill banning children under 15 from using social media.

According to it, platforms will not be able to serve users under 15 and will be required to implement an age verification system. It will also provide parental controls — time limits, spending approvals and account management. Platforms that do not comply will face fines, advertising bans and gradual internet speed restrictions.

The government has also decided to introduce special SIM cards that block inappropriate content for children, and is considering blocking VPN services and controlling internet use for those under 18. The document will enter into force after being signed by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the restrictions will take effect after 6 months.
