Thousands of migrants reach Spain by sea

On July 30, an estimated 2,000–3,000 migrants swam from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa. Ceuta and Melilla are Spain’s autonomous cities in North Africa and form the European Union’s only land border with Africa, making them frequent targets for irregular border crossings.

As the situation escalated, the Spanish government deployed additional police and military personnel to the area. According to preliminary reports, at least nine people were killed during the incident.

Spain’s Ministry of the Interior said it is working closely with Morocco to combat the growing number of irregular migration attempts.

Experts have compared the situation to the 2021 migration crisis, when nearly 10,000 migrants entered Ceuta within just a few days.
