Former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica, known as the world's poorest president, has died at the age of 90. This was announced by the current president, Yamandu Orsi. The country has declared a state of mourning until May 16.
Mujica was born on May 20, 1935. He served as president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. As head of state, he lived a very modest life, living with his wife in a country house and spending almost all of his salary on charity. For this reason, the media called him "the world's poorest president." Mujica's presidency was notable for the fact that Uruguay was the first in the world to legalize marijuana. In 2024, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and refused treatment. He said goodbye to his people in January.
