The world’s most expensive foot: a Michelangelo drawing sold for $27 million

A drawing by Renaissance artist and sculptor Michelangelo (1475–1564) was sold at a Christie’s auction for $27.2 million. Its starting price was $2 million, and the bidding lasted over 45 minutes. This became the most expensive work by Michelangelo ever sold at auction.

Experts identified a previously unknown red-chalk sketch depicting the right foot of a Sibyl associated with the Oracle of Zeus-Ammon in the Siwa Oasis of the Libyan Desert.

Michelangelo had a profound influence on the development of Western art. His most famous works include the ceiling frescoes of the Sistine Chapel, the statue of David, and the Vatican’s Pietà.
