The US said Russia launched a satellite last week that could attack other probes.
"Russia has launched a satellite into low Earth orbit that we believe is a counterspace weapon," Pentagon spokesman Gen. Pat Ryder said late Tuesday.
He said the US government was "in the same orbit" as the satellite, that Washington would continue to monitor the situation and be ready to defend its interests.
Russia has not publicly commented on this.
Moscow and Washington - two global rivals - have clashed several times in recent weeks at the United Nations over space weapons, with both sides accusing the other of seeking to militarize space. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Tuesday morning that the United States is seeking to turn space into a "field of military confrontation."
A number of military experts have long warned that space could be the next frontier in warfare in an increasingly technology-dependent world.
"Russia has placed a new anti-space weapon into the same orbit as a US government satellite.
"Thus, the assessments show similar characteristics to previously deployed counter space payloads in 2019 and 2022.
The satellite, Kosmos 2576, was launched on May 16 from Russia's Plesetsk Cosmodrome, 800 km (497 miles) north of Moscow.
