At the forty-fifth plenary session of the Senate of the Supreme Assembly, the law “on amendments and additions to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Code of administrative responsibility of the Republic of Uzbekistan”was discussed.
It is noted that in recent times, the country has only experienced a religious picture-the number of marriages concluded according to the rules, followed by a growing number of cases of polygamy. Promotion of polygamy and its “advantages”is also on the rise through advertising, entertainment and analytical materials. This also resulted in an increase in the number of children born without legal marriage.
In the Republic, babies born in 16,564 cases were registered under the single mother application in 2020, compared to 18,955 in 2022.
By law, it is intended to establish administrative and criminal liability for the implementation of a religious ceremony involving the conclusion of a marriage between persons whose marriage is not recorded in the manner established by law, promoting that one category of citizens is superior or defective to another, depending on national, racial, ethnic or religious affiliation.
At the same time, the law establishes administrative responsibility for promoting married life with two or more wives, openly denying the equality of women and men.
There is also a measure of administrative responsibility for being face-blocked in public places to the point of making identification impossible in order to further improve the effectiveness of information programs introduced under the Safe City concept. In this case, circumstances that exclude liability are also taken into account.
” It was noted that the adoption of this law will serve to further strengthen interethnic harmony, religious tolerance in society, maintain secular values, and ensure reliable protection of women's rights, " the message said.
The bill was approved by senators.
