If Iran were to develop nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia would have to do the same "from a security point of view to maintain the balance of power," said Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in an interview with Fox News.
"The use of nuclear weapons by any country means that it is at war with the whole world. The world does not need another Hiroshima. "If the world sees 100,000 dead, it means you are at war with the whole world," said the prince.
He noted that Saudi Arabia does not seek such weapons, but "Iran's nuclear program leaves no other choice."
For information, Saudi Arabia initially joined the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons; officials had advocated for the region's nuclear-free status, but in 2011 they reversed their position, saying that if neighboring countries acquired nuclear weapons, they would be forced to take similar measures.
The prince has previously warned that the country is preparing to develop a nuclear bomb, in particular, in 2018, he noted that the kingdom was "following the example" of Iran in this regard.
Saudi officials do not rule out the possibility of a war with Iran in the near future. In 2018, the crown prince called on other countries of the world to impose sanctions against Iran for economic and political pressure.
"If we do not succeed in our work, we may have a war with Iran in 10-15 years," said Mohammed bin Salman.
According to US calculations, if the Iranian government decides to develop a nuclear weapon, it can be done in a few months, and it takes 12 days to develop special fuel. According to the White House, Iran should not be allowed to do so "under any circumstances". If Tehran gets nuclear weapons, Israel will get "freedom of movement," US officials said.
Iranian officials insist that there are no plans for nuclear weapons, and foreign countries call the claims false. The IAEA stated that there is no evidence that Iran is engaged in the production of nuclear weapons.
