The “One Piece” flag has become a symbol of youth protests across several Asian countries

The flag, featuring a skull wearing a yellow straw hat, originates from the popular Japanese anime “One Piece”, where a group of pirates fights against authoritarian regimes in the name of freedom.

The symbol first appeared during anti-corruption protests in Indonesia in July. Demonstrators displayed the flag on city squares, houses, trucks, and even boats. The image quickly caught the attention of authorities, who reacted harshly — government officials reportedly described the flag’s use as an act of treason and a challenge to state authority.

Since then, the “One Piece” flag has spread beyond Indonesia. In Nepal, it became an emblem of Generation Z’s protests that contributed to the downfall of the government. Across social media, the straw-hat skull flag has come to represent a broader ideal — a symbol of hope for freedom, resistance, and a new world order built on justice.
