"The death toll from the fires that have engulfed Maui since Tuesday has increased to 89 people," Green said.
The governor warned that there will be more victims and the authorities want to prepare people for this.
The channel notes that with the death toll rising to 90, the ongoing fire disaster on the islands has officially become the deadliest in modern US history. Earlier, this anti-record was recorded after a fire in California in 2018, in which 85 people died.
The disaster in Maui arose due to dry and hot weather, the fire is aggravated by strong winds brought by Hurricane Dora. Some fires reach an area of 400 hectares. The fire destroyed several settlements, including the popular tourist city of Lahaina. The authorities are forced to block roads, public transport does not work. Hundreds of local residents were evacuated.
President Joe Biden ordered all structures of federal subordination in Hawaii, including the military, to join the fight against fires. The Pentagon previously reported that National Guard soldiers and helicopters were involved to help local authorities.
