According to the Ministry, in 2023, 47,107 people will celebrate their 100th birthday. The government sends them congratulatory letters and souvenirs. In Japan, the number of people over 100 years old has been increasing since the 1963 law on social security for the elderly. In 1963, there were 153 people over 100 years old in the country. In 1981, their number exceeded 1,000, in 1998 - 10,000, and in 2012 - 50,000.
