Donald Trump once again failed to win the Nobel Peace Prize this year. The 2026 award went to South African jurist Navanethem Pillay. The Nobel Committee recognized her role in ensuring accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
Pillay was born in 1941 into a Tamil family in Durban, South Africa. Throughout her legal career, she has focused on human rights and international justice. In 1995, she was appointed as a judge of the High Court of South Africa. She later served as a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. From 2008 to 2014, she served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. She also chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory from 2021 to 2025.
On October 7, Trump had stated that he deserved the Nobel Prize, highlighting his contributions to resolving international conflicts. He claimed to have resolved eight wars, though he also expressed uncertainty about whether he would actually receive the award.
