The Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh will be dissolved on January 1, 2024. Meduza reports that the president of the unrecognized republic, Samvel Shahramanyan, signed the relevant decree.

"Until January 1, 2024, all state institutions and organizations under its departmental control should be terminated, and the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) should cease its activities," the decree reads.

On September 2, 1991, it was announced that the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh was established within the borders of the Karabakh Autonomous Region and some territories adjacent to the Azerbaijan SSR. The republic is not recognized by any UN member state. Azerbaijan insisted that Karabakh is an integral part of it, while Armenia supported the unrecognized republic. The conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh has not stopped since 1991, but has repeatedly turned into armed conflicts and large-scale military operations (in 1992-1994 and 2020).

On September 19, Azerbaijan announced that "local anti-terrorist measures" will be carried out in order to "restore the constitutional order" in Karabakh. On September 20, a ceasefire agreement was reached - one of its conditions was the disarmament of the Karabakh army and the complete withdrawal of the Armenian military from the unrecognized republic.

According to reports, Karabakh Armenians and Azerbaijani officials met to "discuss issues of reintegration, ensuring the rights and security of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians," but did not reach an agreement.

Tens of thousands of Armenians have already left Karabakh.
