Turkish Minister of Ecology and Urban Development Mehmet Ozhaseki said that next week the authorities will begin to prepare Istanbul for a possible earthquake. Seismologists had previously warned of the dangers of landslides in Istanbul.

“We held a meeting with the mayor of Istanbul and district leaders on the possible earthquake in Istanbul, reached a principled agreement. We will start work next week,” Ozhaseki said at a press conference.

According to him, there are 5,800,000 buildings in Istanbul. Of these, 1.5 million are at risk, while 600 thousand are at high risk. The minister did not clarify the details of the preparation for the earthquake.

Turkish seismologist Naji Geryur said that experts expect an earthquake of magnitude 7.2-7.6 in the area of the marble sea. According to him, there may be a rupture in the northern branch of the North Anadolu tectonic plate. According to seismologists, the next earthquake in Turkey could occur before 2030.

On February 6 of this year, two powerful earthquakes occurred in southeastern Turkey. This was followed by more than 46,000 deaths in Turkey and about 8.5,000 in Syria. The WHO has called these landslides the worst natural disaster in the European region in the last hundred years.
