A vast area of Chile's Atacama Desert has become blanketed in colorful flowers following heavy rains. This is a rare natural phenomenon occurring in one of the world's driest non-polar deserts.
Earlier in the year, the region experienced heavy precipitation driven by the El Niño weather phenomenon. As a result, millions of seeds and bulbs—dormant in the soil for years or even decades—sprouted.
According to CONAF, more than 200 plant species have bloomed in the desert. The flowering area covers approximately 17,000 square kilometers.
In July and August, some areas received between 160 and 190 millimeters of rainfall. Experts describe this as the most extensive and intense flowering season in the Atacama since 1997.
The blooming desert has also attracted the attention of tourists. The phenomenon is expected to last until November, with nearly 300,000 tourist visits anticipated during this period.
