The City Erased by an Earthquake

The CASIA.UZ team recently visited the ancient city-museum of Axsikent in Namangan as part of a press tour organized by the Tourism Committee.

Axsikent was once the heart of the Fergana Valley and served as its capital in the 9th–10th centuries. It was a major hub of culture, craftsmanship, and trade — one of the key cities along the Silk Road.

However, in 1621, a devastating earthquake destroyed the entire city. The ruins of Axsikent remained buried for centuries and today stand as one of Uzbekistan’s most significant archaeological heritage sites.
