Turkmen experts took part in the international symposium "The Non-Aligned Movement in a Changing and Complex Global Context" held in Baku on May 16. The forum was organized jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, the Center for Analysis of International Relations and LINKS Europe and brought together representatives of dozens of NAM countries.

Before the neutral status was delegated to our state by the world community represented by the UN General Assembly in 1995, Turkmenistan's desire for neutrality received unanimous support from the countries of the Movement at the summit in the Colombian city of Cartagena.

National leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, speaking on the eve of the quarter-century anniversary of Turkmen neutrality, said that we will never forget and always gratefully emphasize the role of the non-aligned countries in gaining a neutral status for Turkmenistan and that the principles of neutralism are in tune with the goals of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Director of the Center for Strategic Studies of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Shiri Shiriyev, speaking at the symposium, emphasized the role of the countries of the Non-Aligned Movement in obtaining the status of neutrality for Turkmenistan.

"The basis of the foreign policy of the non-aligned countries is the refusal to participate in military-political blocs and the peaceful coexistence of peoples based on the principles of independence and equality," Shiriyev stressed.

He also noted that about 55% of the world's population lives in the NAM countries, more than 75% of the world's oil reserves and over 50% of the world's gas reserves are concentrated in them.

“Neutral Turkmenistan, like the Non-Aligned Movement, stands for the resolution of conflict situations exclusively by political, diplomatic, negotiation methods and means,” Shiriyev said, adding that in recent years, Turkmenistan has brought many productive ideas and practical recommendations in the field of security to international negotiation platforms. and cooperation.

He recalled the Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement “Promotion of International Peace and Security for Sustainable Development” held in Baku in 2018, which was attended by representatives of 120 states, including Turkmenistan.

At the end of the NAM ministerial conference, the Final Declaration was adopted, which reflects the initiatives of Turkmenistan regarding the implementation of large-scale projects in the transport and energy sectors of the Afghan economy.

An important event in strengthening the multilateral dialogue on topical issues on the international agenda was the participation of the President of Turkmenistan in the XVIII Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, held in October 2019 in Baku.

Many more examples can be cited that the close cooperation of Turkmenistan with the Non-Aligned Movement is of a concrete and active nature, which is determined, first of all, by the common principles of non-alignment and the policy of neutrality.

And such interaction, in our opinion, will tend to progressive development in the name of maintaining stability in the world and the region.
